Indicators of Child Sexual Abuse
Child sexual abuse is the exploitation of a child by an adult, adolescent or older child for sexual purposes. This includes penetration, fondling, exhibitionism, prostitution and photographing the child for the purpose of pornography.
What are some signs that my child may have been sexually abused?
Please be aware that the presence of some of these signs in your child does not confirm they have been sexually abused, however the combination of several severe symptoms may indicate possible abuse. In addition, these may also be indicators of other problems in your child’s life. It is always important to follow up with a professional when experiencing any of these signs.
- Disturbed sleep patterns, nightmares, fear of going to bed or sleeping alone, bedwetting
- Consistent change in eating habits (eating more or less than usual)
- Aggressive and/or defiant behaviors
- Withdrawal from usual activities and play
- Sudden difficulty at school (academic and/or behavior problems)
- Excessive masturbation
- Sexual acting out toward adults, toys, or other children
- Knowledge of sexual matters inappropriate for age
- Fear of and/or refusal to undress
- Desire to wear excessive layers of clothing
- Alcohol/drug abuse
- Promiscuity
- Self injury
- Suicide attempts
- Excessive fear of people and/or places
- Physical injury to private parts
